Hackers break into Sarah Palin’s inbox!
UPDATE: For a follow-up on the situation, see here.
It appears the infamous group of cyber-mischief makers “anonymous” are up to their old tricks, and this time they had Governor Palin in their sights.
While this has not been completely confirmed, it seems that some time over night or early this morning, somebody was able to compromise “gov.palin@yahoo.com,” by apparently discovering the password to the account. The password was posted to a public forum, 4chan.org, and a field day ensued. Within a short time, another “anonymous” had changed the password on the account to effectively lock everybody else out, and later this morning the account had been locked completely by Yahoo.
Anonymous is the same group responsible for such stunts as the NFL dirty bomb threat in October 2006, and has more recently been behind organized global protests of Scientology.
Just last week, the Washington Post published an article about Sarah Palin’s use of this very same Yahoo e-mail account. Palin’s use of a public e-mail service rather than the secure state e-mail system raised some eyebrows, as she was potentially communicating about sensitive matters, off the record, on a third party service. Arguing that she should be using the secure and encrypted state e-mail system, an activist in her state had called for the release of her e-mails.
Well, it looks like lawyers won’t be necessary, as “anonymous” might have done the job for them.
The images below were posted to a Photobucket account owned by a user named “anoncrack.” They include a message to Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell, a message of encouragement from Amy McCorkell (a member of Palin’s Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in Alaska), general screen shots of Palin’s inbox, a message from the “anonymous” who apparently tried to close off access to Palin’s inbox, and some family photos that were found in attachments.
UPDATE: 2:00PM EST, Wired News is now reporting this story, and has received confirmation from Amy McCorkell that she indeed sent the message that appears in one of the screen shots.

What’s not being said here is “how” someone hacked into her Yahoo account. I realize that movies make it look easy: throw a smart kid in front of a computer, he thinks for a few seconds and voila, he’s in. It’s not so simple in practice.
I have to wonder if someone at Yahoo was involved in this. Preposterous? You mean, just like a “professional” photographer would never betray her client’s trust and do something embarrassing?
Comment by Robert W. — September 17, 2008 @ 1:59 pm
P.S. I just noticed on the Digg link that someone is encouraging a Yahoo employee to circulate more of Palin’s personal info. Is this what professionalism amongst Radical Liberals has come down to? What’s the penalty for such a crime?
Comment by Robert W. — September 17, 2008 @ 2:02 pm
Do we really want to encourage people or groups to compromise someone’s personal email account? Seems pretty lame.
Comment by Captain America — September 17, 2008 @ 2:03 pm
If Obama’s personal email was hacked, the same people cheering this would be crying foul. Here’s an idea, folks: If there’s something controversial involving her use of email, allow the investigators (including Democratic members) to get subpoenas. That’s what we do in a civilized society. The same people crying foul over the treatment of a terrorist or the listening-in on a phone call are now fine with someone’s email getting hacked and shared? Wow.
Comment by Benson — September 17, 2008 @ 2:18 pm

Yahoo accounts are notoriously easy to hack – all you need to do is “request a new password” and answer some of the “personal” questions, such as your zip code. Really, it’s that easy.
Use Gmail!!!
Comment by Kozaburo — September 17, 2008 @ 2:41 pm
For anyone interested on who Amy McCorkell is, I’m not too sure. But the e-mail she used to send it has the prefix of “Yooper”. Well I’m a yooper and it comes from the Upper Peninsula in Michigan if you’re not aware. So I did some research and her name comes up in this article…
http://www.miningjournal.net/page/content.detail/id/512059.html?nav=5007
…as a daughter of the fellow who passed away. This article is published in Marquette (home of yoopers) and mentions McCorkell living in Palmer, AK. It’s no doubt the same lady. It’s a meaningless e-mail I suppose. But I thought I would contribute my investigation.

Hey Cap’n America, get down off your high horse.

Do you really think people who have nothing better to do with their lives hacking into someone’s (anyone’s) personal email advances the use of the Internet? The obvious answer is: hell no!
In all probability, the only thing that will happen after this is that any public figure, irrespective of ideology, will pick up the telephone next time.
Time to busy yourselves with something serious, hacksters.

If you have been following this story since it broke around midnight (like I have) you would know there is more than 1 yahoo email address held by Palin.
The one everyone knows about: gov.sarah@yahoo.com
The previously unknown one that was hacked: gov.palin@yahoo.com
She claimed the first as her “personal” email address, when in fact it was the 2nd one that was the real personal account.
The one she was falsely claiming was her personal account is the one that everyone wants the incriminating emails from made public. gov.sarah@yahoo.com was purposely created to hide evidence of her abuse of power…not as her personal account. This one was not hacked.
But it seems that both accounts were deleted at the exact same time…and nobody hacked that really important one. So, guess who did the deleting? Must have been Palin herself or someone working for her.
But worry not… Yahoo does make backups and can recover everything she has deleted, probably going back 6 months (or longer), from both accounts, if they are subpoenaed to do so. Palin should have read Yahoo’s privacy & data retention policies when she created her accounts.

Really, it looks like personal chatter between friends, with no “sensitive” information given.
Who here hasn’t chatted about their respective jobs with friends? Do you give trade secrets in those emails? Of course not.
What, people shouldn’t be allowed to express concerns or personal feelings to a friend unless it is on an official channel? Ridiculous.
The person/people who invaded Gov. Palin’s(and the other people’s) personal privacy should get prison.
Though the one who changed the password and alerted Gov. Palin’s friend to what was going on should be thanked and even rewarded. Nice to seem some hackers have some morals.

Isn’t it ironic that the only ones actually SHOWING these emails are the right-wing decriers? It’s a funny way to demand privacy by showing the emails and pictures!
By the way, it’s always wrong to hack a personal email. But let’s be honest: Palin was avoiding scrutiny of her state emails by conducting state business on personal emails. It’s precisely because they’re offlimits that she was using it for her power-hungry vendettas.

They know who “anonymous” is – It’s a 20 year old from Tennessee – got this froma a reliable blog – here is update:
UPDATE: ApparentlyMichelle Malkin received an email from the culprit explaining what happened. Key verse?
“Earlier it was just some prank to me, I really wanted to get something incriminating which I was sure there would be, just like all of you anon out there that you think there was some missed opportunity of glory, well there WAS NOTHING, I read everything, every little blackberry confirmation… all the pictures, and there was nothing, and it finally set in, THIS internet was serious business, yes I was behind a proxy, only one, if this shit ever got to the FBI I was (explicit deleted), I panicked, i still wanted the stuff out there but I didn’t know how to (explicit deleted) all that stuff, so I posted the pass on /b/, and then promptly deleted everything, and unplugged my internet and just sat there in a comatose state”
Son, you have no idea how much trouble you are in. Put it this way, if the FBI/SS get a hold of you “comatose” would be a picnic.
UPDATE: The UK Register, a tech website claims to have identified someone who can help lead to “Anonymous”.
“Memo to law enforcement investigators tracking down who broke into Sarah Palin’s Yahoo email account: Gabriel Ramuglia might be a good place to start.
The 25-year-old webmaster and entrepreneur is the operator of Ctunnel.com, the browsing proxy service used by the group that hacked into the vice presidential candidate’s personal email account and exposed its contents to the world. While he has yet to examine his logs, he says there’s a good chance they will lead to those responsible, thanks to some carelessness on their part.
“Usually, this sort of thing would be hard to track down because it’s Yahoo email, and a lot of people use my service for that,” he told El Reg in a phone interview. “Since they were dumb enough to post a full screenshot that showed most of the [Ctunnel.com] URL, I should be able to find that in my log.”
Ramuglia got into the proxy business a few years ago, after schools began blocking access to an online game site he used to co-own. Pretty soon, people began using the proxy service to access YouTube, Gmail, MySpace, and dozens of other sites that are routinely blocked by IT departments.”
Now awaiting an update on “Gawkr” – rumor has it that court order could be on the way for a shut down

Throughout the entire primaries and the general election, the Obama campaign has played dirty politics. In addition to the never ending vitriol of the Obama bloggers on the internet, nearly every time I have posted a supportive blog for Hillary Clinton … and, then for McCain/Palin … my computer’s mailbox has been inundated with hundreds of pieces of email spam. Another example of under handed behavior by Obama’s henchmen, is that they have been organized to approach retirement homes, as volunteer community speakers … only to visit multiple times spewing lop sided pro-Obama, and negative McCain propaganda to elderly people, to get their votes in November. And, now we can see unprincipled politicians and bias media hacks using the race card … telling people ” if you don’t vote for Obama, you must be a racist”. Usually, when Americans uncover such despicable tactics, they can count on the mainstream media to expose it to the public … however, in this case, most of the mainstream media is in the tank for Obama … so, they either look the other way, or they make phony biased excuses to mischaracterize, and cover up what’s really happening.

While there’s no law per se against a private citizen gathering evidence, lots of people do things everyday for which they may be held to account. Not that Governor Palin is among them. I wouldn’t expect to find anything incriminating. Citizens do have rights though, the right to be secure in their papers among them. Due to the electronic medium, the Sarah Palin case should be groundbreaking. Here’s something: whenever one’s cell phone is switched on, not necessarily making a call mind you, just turned on, that even if it’s not a GPS enabled device, it emits a signal that anyone who might know your SIM card number may track with an array of inexpensive software. GOOGLE GPS tracking devices. The phone’s speaker can also be remotely switched on for use as a listening device. Perhaps you’re wondering, as did I, how certain individuals seem to know your whereabouts, or manage to show up when and where they do. GPS, email, and high tech devices lend the good, the bad & the ugly a level of sophistication hitherto unimagined. Cell phone option: when not in use, remove the battery: http://theseedsof9-11.com

Barracuda refused to turn over 1100 emails in a F.O.I.A. Stating they are of a personal nature, when they are not. That’s a federal crime. It’s a pre-meditated crime, which to commit the crime of illegally shielding government documents is why she was using the account in the first place. Moreover the Attorney Generals Office of the great state of Alaska just issued an opinion that if government documents are in a private e-mail account, the State has the right to review them, that they must be saved for three years, and that to destroy (delete) them is a crime. In my opinion, Palin or someone in her employment (McCorkell? Having a P.I. Background & couldn’t resist giving herself 2 min. of fame)done this as an excuse to delete and/or discredit the account.I believe the trail will lead back to them if it’s followed in a prudent manner. Everyone so smart call this hacker so dumb.Do we have a sloppy hacker or a smart and devious hacker framing the kid?don’t say no or act like you’re so smart if you haven’t considered it.If the I.P. Addy matches the kid in question yet it still doesn’t add up a then programs like netbus or back orifice with a built in wiping routine should be considered. These are common names for a trojan jacker that a hacker can take over your computer use it without you knowing it,then attack others with your computer address. It turns your computer into a proxy..after the deed is done it can erase itself and fill in where it was with random bytes. Anyone can download these programs off the net in a matter of three minutes..Remember M.O.M. (means, opportunity,& motive)Who really has all three? Palin…Let us not forget the bug Karl Rove found in his Texas office and the WHOLE story behind that!! What, you don’t know what I’m talking about? Oh well whatever nevermind

Gift: “Can you do your chest-thumping display for all of us again, please?”
Oh you do like that chest thumping don’t you! Turns you wingnuts on doesn’t it? I’ll leave the chest thumping to your idle in the Whitehouse. Wouldn’t want you and Larry Craig to get turned on by a liberal.
Jackass!
