PAUSA Art House One-Year Anniversary Weekend

Pausa Art House. 19 Wadsworth St. 8pm. $10/$7 students

580733_277956202337561_1981562102_nIn celebration of their one-year anniversary, PAUSA Art House will be featuring a four-day mini festival of jazz, beginning tonight (Feb 27) through Sunday (March 2) with an exclusive performance from Star People. The group, comprised of established jazzers in John Bacon Jr. (drums), George Caldwell (piano), Bobby Millitello (alto sax), Doug Stone (tenor sax), Tim Clarke (trumpet) and Danny Zieman (bass), will be performing the music from two of Miles Davis’ landmark albums, A Kind of Blue and Milestonesin their original album form. Pausa’s birthday weekend continues on Friday with the newly formed “Pausa only” ensemble Why Not? (8pm, $7) performing a mix of original charts and the music of Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, and Ornette Coleman among others. Pausa mainstay and jazz scholars What Would Mingus Do? return after a brief hiatus on Saturday (8pm, $7). Brooklyn based avant-garde sax/percussion duo of Jonah Parzen Johnson and Austin Vaughn have received accolades from the likes of the New York Times, and close out the festivities on Sunday with a matinee performance (2pm, $7). If you haven’t yet been to PAUSA Art House, it’s a beautifully intimate venue that focuses on music concerts and artistic exhibitions from artists indigenous to the Buffalo area. It is the type of venue that Buffalo had been sorely lacking before its arrival, and if the memorable concerts and exhibitions over the past year is an indication of what Pausa is all about, the future certainly looks bright. Happy first birthday to PAUSA Art House, and many more to come. —jon wheelock
