Top 10 Songs About 9/11

Remember when music was used as a tool to protest? As an anti-war tool, an activists tool, a civil rights tool? What happened to those days? Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are a-Changin’” are still remembered as classic, effective, anti-war songs but you won’t see anything like that from a mainstream rock band, or rapper these days. Still, some songs about September 11th, 2001 have snuck by in the last decade, but you might not recognize most of them. Some, like the Beastie Boys “An Open Letter to NYC” mean to celebrate New York City’s diversity and perseverance (“Dear New York I know a lot has changed/two towers down but you’re still in the game/Home to many rejecting know one/Accepting peoples of all places, wherever they’re from”) Others, like Anti-Flag’s “911 For Peace” are a message to the people in charge, on both sides, to change their ways (“To the oppressors of the world and to the leaders of nations, corporate profit takers, to the every day citizen: greed, envy, fear, hate and the competition has to stop”). And beware; some like Immortal Techniques “Cause of Death” might even offend, and might be contrary to your views. Are these people patriots? Traders? You decide. Here are the top 10 songs about September 11th., and no, Toby Keith is not on this list. —cory perla
