Before Detroit was known for techno and its off-shoots, it was known as Motown. Motown produced a collection of some of the world’s greatest R&B, funk, and rock n’ roll acts ranging from George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic to Stevie Wonder. One band combined all three of these aspects: Rare Earth. Lending their rock n’ roll and funk styles to classic songs like “I Know I’m Losing You” and “Get Ready” by the Temptations, Rare Earth were one of the first primarily white hit-makers signed to Motown Records. “Hit-makers” is an understatement though when you take into account their 1971 mega-hit “I Just Want to Celebrate,” which, although only a minor hit at the time, has come to be one of the most recognized songs of their era, appearing in commercials for Ford Motor Company, on television shows like Entourage and Six Feet Under, in movies like Land of the Lost and Tropic Thunder, sampled by rapper Ghostface Killah, and even covered by heavy metal band Metallica. Most of the (still living) line-up will return to the Seneca Niagara Casino’s Bea’r Den for a special performance on Saturday (Oct 1). —cory perla
