YAK Car Pic of the Day

Saw one of those blah, blah, blah lists of Ten Car Movies You Must See Before You Die or some such thing, and my eyes locked-in on 1971’s Two-Lane Blacktop when I saw it starred James Taylor and the Beach Boys’ Dennis Wilson. Artsy types trumpeted it as movie of the year, but it bombed at the box office. It also bombed in my living room, as I thought the dialog sounded as if it were written by a seven-year-old, and the acting reminded me of the one-act plays we used to put on in CYO. The car scenes weren’t even that good. Ugh! This 1955 Chevy One-Fifty was one of the two cars being driven in a winner-take-all race across the country by The Driver (Taylor) and The Mechanic (Wilson). Also featured were the driver  (G.T.O.) of the other car — a 1970 GTO, and a young girl who can’t seem to decide who she wants to ride with (The Girl). Seeing character names like these in the opening credits should have been a clue. I’ll give it 1/2 star just for putting Taylor and Wilson together in a movie.
