YAK Car Pic of the Day

Who’d ever expect to find a 1950 Packard Eight Sedan in the annex parking lot of the Fashion Outlet Mall in Niagara Falls? Not me, but here’s one now, seen yesterday complete with a set of period 1950 plates. In an effort to modern-up the stale 1947 styling, a larger (and much heavier) body was designed for 1948 and immediately derisively nicknamed the “pregnant elephant.” Although sales weren’t terrible, they weren’t good either, and the pachyderms hung around until a new — and as it turns out, final — total restyle came out for 1951. The last Packards went out the door in 1956, not counting the (ugh!) Studebaker-based cars of 1957-58.
