Sierra Niagara Award Winners 2014

The Sierra Niagara Chapter of the Sierra Club held its annual Awards Dinner in early May and gave separate awards to Artvoice, and to GreenWatch and The Learning Sustainability Campaign founder Jay Burney.

Artvoice was given the Blake Reeves Award for leadership in the coverage of critical environmental issues such as fracking, renewable energy, and water protection. Blake Reeves was a longtime WNY activist involved with many local organizations including Buffalo Audubon, Western New York Land Conservancy, and was the founder of the Sierra Niagara Chapter.  Past recipients of the Blake Reeves Award include Joanne Hameister of the Coalition on West Valley Nuclear Waste, and Cara Mattaiano  of the Community Foundation for Buffalo.

Burney was given the Bruce Kershner Conservation Award for his active leadership in preserving the natural heritage of the region. Kershner was a staunch and outspoken advocate of the conservation movement -especially the old growth forests of Western New York. Past winners of the Kershner Award include David Kowalski, founder of the Re-Energize Buffalo Blog, and Walter and Nan Simpson.
