YAK Car Pic of the Day

This is one wacky-looking Bertone X1/9. A mid-engined two-seat sports car, its wedge shape was somewhat reminiscent of the Triumph TR7. My Godfather (rest his soul) would have delighted in calling this silver example, seen late last spring on Grand Island, “Liver Lip.” That bright white chin spoiler is just too much, as is the wing which is slightly visible in this photo on the car’s rear deck. You may be wondering why I’m not calling this a Fiat X1/9. That’s because… well, because it isn’t. Fiat stopped importing cars into the U.S. in 1982, at which point the X1/9’s production was taken over by Bertone, who designed the car that debuted as a Fiat for the 1972 model year. Bertone too, threw in the towel in 1989, and that was the end of the X1/9.
