YAK Car Pic of the Day

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

“Damned be the gas prices, full speed ahead!” could just be the motto of the North Tonawanda family in whose driveway I saw this 1977 Continental Mark V, along with a 1989 Lincoln Town Car lurking behind it. No it wasn’t 25 years ago, but more like a summer or two back in time. The Town Car had already experienced a downsizing by 1989, but the Mark V in 1977 was still in its complete state of hugeness, and wouldn’t shed any inches until the arrival of the Mark VI in 1980. By then they started looking silly; or, sillier, depending on your point-of-view.

As hulky as that Mark V was, it did have appealing lines. Too bad that appeal wasn’t retained when it was downsized.

They did agility road tests on a recent episode of Top Gear UK with a similar Mark V. Jeremy Clarkson mused on just how you could get so few HP out of such a gigantic V8

The Mark V is one of the cars I immediately visualize when I read Douglas Adams’ line “looks like a fish, moves like a fish, steers like a cow”.
