YAK Car Pic of the Day

72 stutz blackhawk

Hard to say (well, not really) what possessed Sammy Davis, Jr. to buy this 1972 Stutz Blackhawk. I guess it matched his personality, not to mention the fact that it coordinated well with his wardrobe. The Blackhawk was in production for 16 years by the Stutz Motor Company starting in 1971. The first one was bought by — who else? — Elvis. For Stutz officials it was a toss-up between selling that first Blackhawk to The King or Frank Sinatra, but Elvis agreed to help publicize the car while Ol’ Blue Eyes balked. A partial ownership list of these monstrosities is a “Who’s Who” of kitschiness: Dean Martin, Liberace, Wayne Newton, Barry White… the Shah of Iran supposedly had 12!

(This whole posting came about while listening to Sammy belt out “I’ve Gotta Be Me” out of my iTunes list while wasting time on the internet. Look at me, I’m multi-tasking!) — Jim Corbran, You Auto Know

Looks like the Stutz design team played every schlock visual gimmick that Detroit had tried and discarded. Ghastly machine!
