As the country remembers the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy—a WWII naval hero—we receive via official navy email this image of Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Handling Airman Jennifer L. Confer, of Buffalo, NY, performing a different sort of heroic act.

Confer is shown directing the first ever take-off of a V-22 Osprey aboard the USS Ashland (LSD-48). She is part of relief operations underway in the Leyte Gulf, Philippines, delivering aid in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan. The death toll from that storm is currently at 5,200 and climbing.
