Here’s a press release from VOICE Buffalo / Gamaliel WNY:
THE VOICE-BUFFALO Public Meeting: Our Community Our Vision
VOICE-Buffalo will demonstrate the power of the people by uniting the city and county around the issues of our time. The voices of concerned citizens will roar and echo across the county with righteous indignation and a vision for change.
[Buffalo, New York] VOICE-Buffalo, a faith-based, community organizing, non-profit organization, calls the residents of Erie County together to magnify the voice of the people for our public leaders to hear and respond to. Under the title, “Our Community Our Vision”, six hundred community members will join their voices and demand that public officials take action on specific issues to improve the quality of life for all of our residents.
WHAT: Issues to be addressed at this public meeting with city, county and state government leaders include:
* Public Transportation: Routes that service the working class and disability community continue to be cut. These decisions reflect the absence of the voice and power of the rider in the decision making process. There is not one transit dependent rider with voting rights on the NFTA Board of Commissioners. This must change.
* Criminal Justice / Restorative Justice: Far too many youth and adults fill our jails and holding centers. We are calling attention to the issues at the Erie County Holding Center and demanding transparency. We must move away from systems of punitive punishment. A vision will be presented for a community-based Restorative Justice Center as a vehicle to redirect those in need away from the courts and jails and towards community.
* Public Education: A movement is growing to reverse the emphasis on high-stakes testing. VOICE-Buffalo parent and teacher leaders will present a plan for collaboration to unite stakeholders in the city and suburbs.
* Get-out-the-Vote: A call to action to encourage people to vote for their values.
WHERE: Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, 345 Seventh Street, Buffalo, NY 14213
WHEN: Thursday, October 24, 2013. Registration at 6:30pm, Meeting begins at 7:00pm
THIS EVENT IS FREE TO ALL.
