La Gran Fiesta: Raíces Theatre Fundraiser

Raíces Theatre is preparing to set up shop as the resident Latin troupe at Road Less Traveled. They will launch the venture in December with their production of La Gringa by Carmen Rivera, the tale of a young Nuyorican woman who travels to Puerto Rico to meet her mother’s family. In the meantime, they’re throwing a party to raise the money needed to mount the production.
Raíces was founded ten years ago by Rolando M. Gómez and Victoria Pérez with a goal of providing a Latin theater for Buffalo. It’s a great idea. The company promises to tap into a decidedly underserved audience in our community, and to showcase a largely ignored repertoire of plays. As they take this next step forward, Raíces needs to raise $5,000.
“La Gran Fiesta” will be held this Saturday, August 31 at 6pm in the Pucho Olivencia Center at 261 Swan Street (where I once attended one hell of a party honoring actress Rita Moreno when she came to town to perform with the BPO). Tickets are $30 per person or $50 for a couple, and include dinner, live music, performances, poetry, dance, and your first drink. Viva la jarana.
