YAK Car Pic of the Day

Because yesterday’s ’57 Star Chief might not have had enough bling for you, here’s a 1958 Pontiac Chieftain, which wasn’t even the chromiest car in the catalog. That honor went to the Bonneville, which made the Star Chief look downright conservative. This yellow-and-white Catalina Coupe (2-door hardtop) was at last Sunday’s Antique & Classic Car Show at the Buffalo History Museum.

This is the car in which I learned to drive, a yellow 1958 Pontiac Chieftain with a two barrel carb. When floored from a standstill with the air cleaner off, the car would literally explode with a roar and take off like a rocket. I ran at the drags but my best time in the quarter was only 16.8 seconds and 85 MPH. This car brings back memories of racing down back country roads with my friends. There was one that was recently sold that had a rebuilt engine with three two’s and a 3 speed trans with 330 HP. That would have been my dream upgrade back then, with a 3/4 race Isky cam of course to boost the HP a bit more and give it some great sound.
