YAK Car Pic of the Day

.

.

When I saw this gold 1965 Ford Thunderbird in Gasport a while ago, it took me back to my youth. Mom had a friend who loved big cars — the first one I remember her having was a 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 convertible. In 1960 my dad bought Mom a new compact Falcon. Which she loved so much her friend was persuaded to trade in her Fairlane 500 on the new, “sporty” 1962 Falcon Futura. Which she hated. In ’64 when this design of the Thunderbird first appeared, she bought a white one with a red interior. I remember being fascinated by the swing-away steering column, a “Thunderbird motoring milestone” according to the brochure; that, and the fact that anybody’s Mom would have her own Thunderbird. If only!
