Lee Marvin as Lt. Frank Ballinger

All this talk of television police cars got me thinking back to a few old cop shows I used to watch which you don’t hear much about anymore. And for some reason I remembered, without looking it up, that Lee Marvin (as Lt. Frank Ballinger on the NBC series M Squad, which ran from 1957-60) drove a black (well, I think it was black — hard to tell in black & white) 1957 Ford Custom Fordor. That was the cheapest Ford line in 1957, and is probably what most Ford police cars were back then. I have to wonder what Ballinger and his comrades would think if they could see today’s police cruiser, with all of their electronic doodads. To get you in the mood, here’s a YouTube link to the M Squad theme song.

Thanks, Jim! I was a fan of M Squad – you can’t go wrong with Lee Marvin, who was convincing in every role he touched – and of the ’57 Ford, too.
