Steam Donkeys Host Beer Blast for Veterans

Honor-Flight-Network-Buffalo-NY-thumb-375xauto-37191The Honor Thy Country concert series continues Saturday night (3/16) at 8pm at the Sportsmen’s Tavern. This month’s installment is a double bill featuring local music legends the Outlyers, and the Steam Donkeys—a four-piece combo and global think-tank.  The series, sponsored by regional brewing powerhouse Genesee Beer & Ale, is devoted to raising money to fly American World War II veterans to Washington, DC, to visit the memorial built in honor of their brave service to our country.

“We did several studies, and couldn’t arrive at a better way to help this noble cause than to enjoy an ice-cold Genesee beer while listening to great, live music in the premier honky tonk in the northeast,” said Steam Donkeys front man and spokesperson Buck Quigley. “What we’re asking of people is not easy. We know it’s difficult work—getting up off the couch, pulling on your coat, making your way to the club, paying the miniscule $5 cover, and having an all-around wonderful time with great people—but would you rather be a young sailor standing on the deck of a destroyer in Leyte Gulf, in the midst of the largest naval battle in world history, watching as a kamikaze plane banks in your direction?”

The National World War II Memorial in Washington was not opened to the public until 2004—nearly sixty years after that horrible war ended. As a result, many American WWII vets never lived to see this honor that was finally bestowed upon them for winning the unconditional surrender of enemies in Europe and Japan and making the United States the world power it is to this day. The cruelty of time is such that 1,000 WWII vets die every day in 2013. Thus far, Honor Flight Buffalo has made that trip possible for 265 surviving World War II veterans. They aim to make it so for many more members of the Greatest Generation.

Pints of Genesee will be on sale for the nostalgic price of $2, and there will be raffles for two pairs of Buffalo Sabres tickets. Additional prizes will include a Genny cooler, and, perhaps even cooler still—a Genesee hunting jacket!

You have your marching orders, soldiers. Don’t let your buddies down.
