YAK Car Pic of the Day

Watkins Glen Race Track, Summer 1975. The crowd was unruly, and pretty ticked-off that the area of the infield known affectionately over the years as “The Bog,” was dry as a bone this summer. Ordinarily a mud pit used for the recreation of four-wheelers, as well as thousands of on-lookers, this summer it turned into a gigantic fire pit. And, unlike this 1966 Plymouth Fury III station wagon, not every vehicle was driven into The Bog with the idea of setting it on fire. For instance, the tour bus chartered by a group of Brazilians in town for the weekend Can-Am races. Luckily no one (that I know of) was hurt. A little farther up the road, a mini riot was breaking out. Standing on the fringes, a friend and I ran for the hills as the State Troopers tear-gassed the crowd. All I can say is — never again! I highly recommend heading for the hills before the tear gas canisters explode.
