YAK Car Pic of the Day

When I shot this photo of Olympic Stadium in Montréal (Stade Olympique) back in August of 1977, who ever figured I’d be posting it 35-odd years later on something called the internet? Going through some old slides over the weekend, I became more aware of some of the cars in the background (or in this case, the foreground) of some of the shots. Like this 1976 Chevy Monte Carlo parked off to the side on Rue Sherbrooke. The Monte Carlos were a big hit with car shoppers, who fully bought into the “personal luxury” concept being thrown at them by manufacturers. And why not? They were certainly more interesting-looking than many of the “regular” two-door hardtops on the market at the time, and pampering yourself is what owning a new car is all about for many of us. The Monte Carlo first appeared in model year 1970, when it sold over 130,000 units. Here’s the ’76 Monte brochure, for your perusal.
