YAK Car Pic of the Day

Obviously, this California blue-tagged 1963 Ford Galaxie 500XL wasn’t photographed today. Or yesterday. But I did drive by it again yesterday morning, where it still sits in a Niagara Falls driveway. This is the regular-roofed version of the XL, and not the fastback-roofed edition introduced as a 1963-1/2 model midway through the model year. This one looks like most of the chrome bits have been nipped, apart from the gas cap emblem in the center of the rear panel, the C-pillar trim, a few trunk-lid letters, and the V-8 engine badge on the leading edge of the front fender. The 500XL was Ford’s large “sporty” line (if there can even be such a thing) whose main competition was the Chevy Impala SS. Back in 1963 my Dad bought a new Galaxie four-door sedan in this same tan color, also missing most of the chrome bits — by design.
