YAK Car Pic of the Day

.

Having a discussion the other night on Facebook about the demise of Suzuki in the U.S. (they’ve filed for bankruptcy and will stop selling cars and trucks here as soon as the present inventory is depleted — you can read the story on my new YAK News blog: youautoknownews.blogspot.com), and I remembered that we used to own a 1996 Geo Metro LSi. And darned if I didn’t have a photo in the files of this one which I recently saw on Buffalo Avenue in Niagara Falls. It’s exactly like ours was. Well, okay, ours had hubcaps… and at one point white sidewall tires. I had to go around to the other side and see if the Wegman’s parking lot dent was there, but it wasn’t. The Geo Metro, to get back to the story, was actually a Suzuki Swift with Geo badging. It was sold at Chevy dealers from 1989 through 1997, when the name was changed to Chevy Metro for four more years before the car was discontinued after the 2001 model year.

  • In the annals of cheap cars this must have been in the Hall of Fame.      What was it like to drive and own?

    • It was actually pretty reliable, and of course, great on gas. And it was quite roomy inside (once you got in); not the quietest or smoothest ride, but that was to be expected
