Sheriff Tim Howard on Joe Arpaio, Racial Profiling

Howard and Arpaio. Photo by Jon Winet.

Last week at the GOP convention in Tampa, Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard posed for this photo with “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” the controversial Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona.

Arpaio, in addition to his uncompromising views on illegal immigration and coddling inmates with things like sufficient food, clothing, and shelter, was front and center in the effort to prove that Barack Obama’s birth certificate was a fake—a conspiracy that even ideologue-for-hire Dinesh D’Souza has discarded.

Here’s what Howard has to say about Arpaio and racial profiling:

“Once you’re in jail, you don’t come back.” Given the number of Sheriff Howard’s inmates who have wound up “hanging themselves,” he might want to consider his language more carefully.

Howard is the creep whose office cooperated with NYPD renegades who had the hots to spy on Howard’s law-abiding Somali employers. I hope those employers and others will soon give Sheriff Howard the opportunity to consider employment elsewhere–Arizona, perhaps?–or to spend more time with his family. It would be too harsh to wish him a night in one of his own cells–I wouldn’t wish that on a dog.
