YAK Car Pic of the Day

The gentleman behind the wheel of this 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE (above) is originally from Germany, so his opinions may be a bit biased. But I couldn’t argue with him when he threw open the door to show me the craftsmanship which went into the interior, right down to the solid, chrome-plated one-piece door jamb. A very impressive car, and as he mentioned while driving off, “Even Mercedes-Benz doesn’t make ’em like this anymore!” And that’s a shame. From last Saturday’s Hemming’s Sports & Exotic Car Show in Saratoga Springs, which is also the current home of today’s feature car.

I’d agree with your German friend, too. The MB’s 280 series in the 70’s were classy, solid and splendid road machines. I had the 280’s little sister –  a ’72 250 sedan that was a joy and it was the only car that I made money on when I sold it, after buying it used and enjoying 3 years of trouble-free service. I do remember wincing from the pangs of regret after the new owner drove it away thinking I’d really made a big mistake.
