’59 Pontiac Catalina Safari wagon — on HGTV’s “Going Yard”

On a recently-watched episode of the HGTV series Going Yard (where the Cape Cod, Mass.-based show’s crew  “transforms a neglected backyard into an eye-popping outdoor family space, suitable for entertaining”), we see host/landscaper Chris Lambton riding the antique bicycle of a client through the neighborhood — right past a 1959 Pontiac Catalina Safari (station wagon) WHICH HE NEVER EVEN COMMENTED ON! C’mon, Chris, get with the program!

You may remember 1959 as the year Pontiac introduced “Wide-Track” into their advertising, which took them out of stodginess into a world of automotive excitement. Sales increased by 75 percent from 1958; Pontiac was taking off and would be a very influential brand through the 1960s (think GTO, Firebird, and Grand Prix). Unfortunately for them, it wouldn’t last, and the brand ceased to exist a couple of years ago.

now THAT’S wide!
