’66 Volvo 122, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

On a drive through Saratoga Springs a while ago, we spotted this For Sale 1966 Volvo 122 outside of a repair shop. In Sweden it was called the Amazon, which you must admit is a much more interesting name, but I always wondered why they didn’t call it that everywhere. Turns out (according to Wikipedia) that a German motorcycle manufacturer had already registered the Amazon name, and would allow Volvo to use it only domestically for its new car. Whatever it was called, these things were tanks!

    I had a ’66 2-door when I was in college. A dependable, solid, indestructible machine and fun to drive, too.  Mine had a 4-speed transmission; I noticed this one’s an automatic as the Swedes put it in script on the trunk lid, back in the days when that was a differentiating factor. Not so anymore; only 6.7% of cars sold in the U.S. have manual trannies. Maybe they should start putting that in script on the trunk…
