YAK Car Pic of the Day – from the Great Race

Not only it is weird to see a 1966 VW Squareback Sedan these days (a.k.a. Type 3 or 1500/1600), it’s even weirder to see one in a race. But here’s the Corey & Jones Team car from last week’s 2012 Hemming’s Motor News Great Race, as it rested after going through the downtown Buffalo checkpoint. Ethan Corey from Melrose, New York drove while Mechanicsville, New York resident Nick Jones performed the equally complicated job of navigating the timed event. And I must say, these two guys looked like they belonged in a 1966 VW! The Type 3 was sold in North America from model years 1966-73. And although over two-and-a-half million were sold, it probably wasn’t as successful as VW had hoped.
I hope later today to post the winning Great Race vehicle.
