YAK Car Pic of the Day

There are many challenges one faces when trying to photograph cars at a car show. Hoards of people who simply won’t get out of the way; cars parked too close together to get a decent shot; the stupid sun in just the wrong place in the sky; and open trunks, hoods, and doors which don’t make for good photos. But take a look anyway at this 1974 Mercury Montego MX Brougham, seen at the recent 2012 Niagara Car Show in Lockport. It’s a weird angle, but from this shot you can get the whole essence of the American automobile industry in the 1970s. For starters, look at those colors; and the battering ram bumpers. Then consider the fact that Mercury was trying to turn an ordinary, everyday car into something special by attaching enough tacky trim to choke a horse, and giving it a pretentious moniker to boot. It’s certainly more interesting to look at now than it was back then.
