YAK Car Pic of the Day

This 1956 Mercury Montclair sure stood out in this Grand Island restaurant parking lot when I was driving by the other day. Even if you weren’t looking, you couldn’t have missed it. The Montclair was Merc’s top-of-the-line model for 1956, and this two-door hardtop had a starting price of $2,765. Doesn’t sound like much today, but Ford’s top two-door, the Crown Victoria, was a mere $2,337 and almost 178,000 were produced. The Montclair two-door? Over 50,000 — showing that most consumers were on to the fact that Mercurys were prettied-up Fords, and maybe not worth the extra four-hundred bucks.
