Porsche 914, Hamburg, N.Y.

Some cars are so cool it’s hard to imagine them coming to an undignified end. And while this mid-engined Porsche 914 isn’t necessarily done for, the fact that it’s become a resting place for the family’s water recreational toys doesn’t bode well for it. The 914 was marketed as both a VW and a Porsche in Europe — the VW had a four-cylinder (the 914) while the Porsche sported six (called the 914/6). Both models in North America were sold as Porsches. Production began in 1969, with the 914/6 being dropped in 1972, and the 914 continuing on until 1976. I found this example while driving through the neighborhood in Hamburg where I grew up.
