James Bond, Agent 007, in an AMC Hornet? Why sointanly! Can you say “product placement?” In 1974’s The Man With the Golden Gun, this red 1974 Hornet X hatchback figures prominently in a great chase scene where Bond, driving the Hornet he just nabbed from a dealer’s showroom (in Thailand. An AMC dealer in Thailand!), reaches the river where, naturally, the bridge is out. So jump across it he does, in a thrilling 360° barrel roll, catapulted off a camouflaged ramp at the river’s edge, and back onto another one on the other side. Those ramps (a.k.a. the Astro Spiral Jump) were produced locally by Calspan (then known as Cornell Aeronautical Labs, Inc.), and for years were stored at a garage on Rte. 20 a couple of miles from my parents’ house in Hamburg. Haven’t seen them in ages, and I’ve always wondered whatever became of them. Read more and see a video here (make sure and also watch the jump from the movie as filmed in real time).
