YAK Car Pic of the Day

'64 Mercury Comet 404, Olean, N.Y.

Driving through Olean one rainy morning, saw this middle-of-the-range 1964 Mercury Comet 404 outside a repair garage. I wonder how long it takes to get parts for a 48-year-old car?

Jim, as you know that Comet’s running gear shared common FOMOCO DNA that was in production for quite a few years, so chasing down mechanical and electrical parts wouldn’t be a big deal. But if the owner crunched a fender and was looking for body and trim pieces, that would be a very big deal.

I had the 2-door Comet Caliente, red on red. Her name was Wendy and she cost me $490 in the summer of 1982. It was hard to find certain parts back then. Fortunately there was a junkyard in town that specialized in old Fords.
