YAK Car Pic of the Day

the Monkeemobile

With the recent passing of Davy Jones I’d be remiss if I didn’t feature the Monkeemobile on YAK TV/Movie Car Day. The famous red convertible (with the oversized top) started life as a 1966 Pontiac GTO. California customizer Dean Jeffries actually built two cars — one for use on the show and another for promotional purposes. It is certainly one of the more memorable tv cars of all time (I still have an unbuilt scale model of it down in the basement somewhere). Jeffries also built the Black Beauty, which was the Green Hornet’s car on that series. You can read an interesting interview with Jeffries here, and his bio here.

  • Joseph Coppola

Cuold Davy Jones (RIP. Bless his soul.) see over the supercharger & blower?

    • Jim Corbran

@Joe – actually… the blower on the version that was built for use on the tv show was made smaller (and was also non-working) because it was just too large.

Even as a kid I thought that car was ugly. It looks like a plastic model car that melted in the hot sun.

Jim, I have never been a big motor head, but I sure look forward to you posts. Living in Canada all summer as a kid, I was always wondering where the cannooks got those what I thought were weird versions of american cars. Please keep up the great work!
