YAK Car Pic of the Day

Matchbox Austin A55 Cambridge

From the collection…  Matchbox issue no. 29, Austin A55 Cambridge, released in 1961. Like any good Matchbox, it came in more than one variation — mine is the two-toned green with a black bottom and black plastic wheels. Some guy in the U.K. has one, with the original box, on eBay with a Buy-It-Now price of $144. I imagine they’re beating down his door with offers!

...and here's a real one

    That is one ugly car.

    It looks a bit like the car that becomes a boat. What car/boat would that have been?

    Also, there is a fine line between ugly and cool; and this model seems to straddle that line.

    @Joe C – Yes, indeedy!
    @Eric P – you’re thinking of the Amphicar, which resembles the Austin from the back, but is like nothing else from the front!

    We saw one of these Austins on the streets of Adare, Ireland a few years ago. All I can say is that it really stood out from the crowd of look-alike cars over there (or, over here for that matter).
