YAK Car Pic of the Day

Lt. Columbo's 1960 Peugeot 403

When the producers of Columbo were doing casting for their series of made-for-TV movies, it wasn’t just actors they were looking for, but a car for the frumpy Lt. Columbo to drive around in. I don’t think anyone will argue with their choice of this 1960 Peugeot 403 cabriolet. It’s frumpy, it’s dumpy, and it’s downright weird! And I doubt if: a) another one has ever been used on a U.S. television series regularly; b) one has ever been driven regularly by a member of any U.S. police department — real or fiction; and c) anyone has ever used the words “regular” and “Peugeot 403 cabriolet” in the same sentence before.

I was always curious about Columbo’s choice of wheels and assumed that the LAPD police pool vehicles were perpetually unavailable. It was a fit for him though, just like his rumpled raincoat. I don’t recall any chase scenes that used that dowdy 403 along the Pacific Coast Highway and for good reason…the bad guys would have gotten away. Jim Rockford made up for that quite well with his early 70’s Firebirds.
