DEC Officials Found to be in Gas Business

The Albany Times Union reports that the NYS Inspector General has discovered that Charles Thropp, a six-year DEC veteran in charge of well inspections and enforcement, never divulged his connection to Cal Ban—an oil and gas company headquartered in Allegany, NY and active in the southern tier. The only phone number we found for the company is out of service.
Thropp claims to have “written off” a quarter of a million dollars in unclaimed paychecks issued to him when he served as president of the company. The case is now being turned over to the Joint Commission on Public Integrity.
Another DEC official, Christopher Miller, who happens to be Thropp’s boss, also has relatives in the oil and gas business.
