YAK Car Pic of the Day

1973 Dodge Coronet, "The Odd Couple"

It’s the 1973 Dodge Coronet that Felix and Oscar won in a radio contest on the episode of The Odd Couple titled “The New Car.” (Not to be confused with a really awful movie I watched the other night called “The Car” which we’ll get to another time.) Perhaps the most difficult part of owning a car in New York City is finding a parking spot. Every day. This episode first aired on October 19, 1973.

Those early 70’s machines weren’t the golden years for MOPAR. They were bulky, clunky cars that rusted out pretty quickly. A friend bought a new Plymouth Satellite in ’74 and by ’77 it was rusting at all the seams although it had only 50K miles. The car had the 318 – not a bad engine in its day – but suffered poor performance as it seemed they could never get the emissions controls synched – it “dieseled” and “knocked” horribly upon acceleration.
