’60 Dodge Polara — “Mr. Hobbs Takes A Vacation”

The 1960 Dodge Polara station wagon driven by Jimmy Stewart’s character in the 1962 movie “Mr. Hobbs Takes A Vacation.” The vacation’s over and the Hobbses are headed back to Chicago, with daughter Katie (Laurie Peters) hanging out the back window for one last look at vacation beau-hunk Joe (Fabian). A great old ’60s overly-styled car — and a great movie. Check it out if you’ve never seen it!

GOOGLE SEZ THAT THE NAMEPOLARA REFERENCED THE POLE STAR. THIS WAS IN THE VANGUARD-SPUTNIK DAYS & THE NAME WAS BASED ON THAT AS A SELLING POINT. I’LL HAVE TO REFER TO MY WIFE RUTHANN ON THE MOVIE, SHE LOVES ALL THAT 60’S ELVIS, ANNETTE & TONY SANDS STUFF. I LIKED JIMMIE STEWART IF HE WAS RIDDING A HORSE.

This was the top of the line wagon from Dodge in 1960. Several interesting notes this 9 seater was one of only 1768 built and just a few exist today. It is a hardtop with no center pillar. Unusual this car has a non-standard after market luggage rack and by the look over the rear axles they have bricks loaded up. It alos does not have the original spinner hubcaps just the standard dish caps.Other movies with the 1960 Polara Wagon..The Birds and most recently Invisible Mom 2.

It may have also been riding low due to the whole family and their summer vacation stuff back there. Living in Chicago, as the Hobbses did, maybe the spinner hubcaps were “borrowed” by someone.
