2012 VW Beetle

There’s a lot to like about the new 2012 VW Beetle (I recently drove one for an upcoming Artvoice Y.A.K. column). One of my favorites, a simple little detail, is this optional wheel cover/trim ring which resembles the old 1960s hubcaps. It looks even better, I think, without the trim ring.

MY 1974 BEETLE WAS ONE OF THE MOST ENJOYABLE CARS EVER. I HAD IT FOR 10 YEARS. (ACTUALLY ONLY 7 YEARS, IT WAS IN STORAGE FOR 3 YEARS WHEN I WAS OVERSEAS) I REALLY LIKED MY “BUG”. I WAS PRETTY LEAN IN THOSE DAYS, IT’D BE MUCH TO SMALL FOR MY ARTHRTIC HIPS NOW.

We had a ’72 Super Beetle for a while.

I still miss my old rear engine, air cooled beetles. As a kid just starting out you’d buy and old junker. Engine died? You and a friend could go to the junkyard, remove an entire engine, cart it home, take your shot engine out and install the used engine in less than a full day. I once had what I called a “semi-automatic” beetle. You had to shift thru the gears but there was no clutch, you just shifted. What I miss most about the old Beetle was that original selling strategy…a car for the People…priced under any competition so anyone could afford it. That is no longer the case. What’s the sticker price on this new one shown here Jim?

2012 Beetles start at an advertised $19,795. The Turbo (which is what I drove) starts at $23,395. Nice cars.

A nice car perhaps but as I said quite the departure from the original intent of the Beetle, affordability. The 2011 Chevy Aveo base price is $11,965. I can remember those TV commercials when the Beetle was selling for $1995. My 2007 Aveo gets my butt up and down the road quite nicely. The price difference as per the Beetle, $7,830 makes me like it even more.
