YAK Car Pic of the Day

Tell me, when was the last time you saw a 1961 Corvair Lakewood 700 station wagon? What? Never? Head over to Grand Islandand you might still catch this one which I spotted sitting in a driveway. Two-toned, wire wheels, white-walls — it still looks great 50 years later! You can view the original brochure here.

’61 Corvair Lakewood 700, Grand Island, N.Y.

It’s an unbelievably remote occurrence to encounter a Lakewood in 2011. Your powers of observation and tireless pursuit of these machines is formidable. If I’m not mistaken, it was a ’61 Lakewood that comedian Ernie Kovacs was driving on a January night in 1962 when he hit a light pole on Santa Monica Boulevard and perished. Not a pleasant legacy to recall but the accident wasn’t attributed to the early Corvairs’ handling inadequacies and tendency for rollovers, but that Kovacs was fatigued and likely had one too many.

Now, that might make for an interesting new YAK Pic category: cars famous people have died in. Funny to think of someone having the bucks to drive anything they wanted picking a Corvair station wagon!
