Wheels in the Grass

’63 Galaxie 500, North Tonawanda, N.Y.

If you’re interested, you can see this 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 four-door sedan parked next to a repair garage in North Tonawanda. It’s been there for a while, wearing some old North Carolina plates. I learned to drive in a similar car, only not quite as fancy: the baser Galaxie series with less chrome, little hub caps, six-cylinder with three-on-the-tree, … no radio! Ugh! The 500 four-door was the year’s most popular full-sized Ford, with 205,722 being produced at a starting list price of $2,613. Geez, Dad, that’s only $106 more than that plain old beige thing you bought — what were you thinking!!??

That ’63 always had a special place in my heart. It was a ’63 Fastback with Ford’s 427 c.i. engine that Tiny Lund drove to victory in the Daytona 500 that year. They were real brutes; lots of flat-out power but handling was awful. “Tiny” was anything but – I think he weighed 250 lbs and his bulk likely help keep that beast on the track.

Same car, but I was a Fred Lorenzen fan — the good ol’ #28 Lafayette Ford!
