YAK Car Pic of the Day

Chatsworth’s Fiat 500 Jolly

It’s not often you’d see a car on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. But here’s rich kid Chatsworth Osborne Jr. driving into the park in his Fiat 500 Ghia Jolly in a 1962 episode of the popular sitcom. Not often seen on the street (or in the park!), the Jolly was primarily used as a taxi or hotel courtesy car in resort areas.

Think of all the different Ghia bodies that were made through the years for all sorts of different projects and product lines. That’s a pretty big number.

Here’s my thought: What a cool museum would this make? Although it may already exist somewhere that I’m just not aware of like in Italy or the like — but have all of the different bodystyles — just the body shells (no wheels, drivetrain, interiors etc) — and have them all painted in the appropriate flat oxide primer of the era (not color) and then set them all inside a huge museum type floorspace with great lighting to see all of the lines on these cars. There are literally dozens of different cool bodies that they made and hundreds if not thousands of different artistic lines on these little pieces of art. Cool exhibit or what? I liked them all and even more now-so.

Thanks for the piece about the 60 Olds too. Looks a lot like the 60 Chev. Where’d you get the Hawaiian Eye cab photo? Too cool! Send me a link will ya?
