Wheels in the Grass

Sometimes you’ve got to climb a fence or two to find an old, interesting car. This one was found in a wrecking yard in Machias, N.Y. — a 1965 Chevy Chevelle 300 Deluxe four-door sedan. The 300 was the base Chevelle model for ’65, while the 300 Deluxe, Malibu, and Malibu SS were, in that order, the higher lines. Interestingly, an old brochure I found also lists a 300 convertible, but I doubt that it was ever offered, as there are no production figures for any such car; numbers are listed only for two- and four-door sedans, and a four-door station wagon. The 300 Deluxe four-door had a starting price of $2,269 with the six-cylinder engine (2,910 produced), and $2,377 with the 283-cu. in. V-8 (3,050 produced).
