Tonight at 10pm get your dance on to some old school soul and funk and support Buffalo’s art scene. Your donation of $5 will help support Sugar City, the arts collaborative at 19 Wadsworth St. Sugar City aims to organize alternative community arts and cultural events in the Buffalo area. They offer music, films, poetry readings, a zine library, an art gallery, workshops, workspaces, and more. Soul Night: Shuffle off to Buffalo will take place at the Elmwood Restaurant Lounge & Bar, 522 Elmwood Ave. Music will be provided by DJs Handsome Dan, Rev. Johnny Drama, and Fab Frankie. In addition to soul classics, the djs will be playing jams by Buffalo based soul groups such as Bob & Gene and Dyke & the Blazers. Recording and performing in Buffalo, Bob & Gene were unable to release their album when their label folded in 1971. Thirty years later their album If This World Were Mine… of soul ballads was released. Listen to Bob & Gene here and watch this video to learn more. Dyke & the Blazers was a funk band from Buffalo that performed as the O’Jays backing band in the mid-1960s. Listen to Dyke & the Blazers here and here.If you like what you hear (and how could you not?) shimmy over to the Elmwood Lounge tonight to hear more.
