Wheels in the Grass

This 1953 Pontiac Chieftain was seen parked in the back row of a bunch of otherwise uninteresting 1970s vehicles in Lakewood, N.Y. a while back. All ’53s were designated Chieftains — some were six- and some were eight-cylinder models; some were Deluxe, while the two-door hardtop added the Catalina moniker. Had this been a Canadian model, it might have shared the ’53 Chevy body, with its shorter rear fenders (including the Chevy taillights) and stubbier trunk. Prices for the U.S. Pontiacs in ’53 ranged from $1,956 for the two-door six-cylinder sedan, up to $2,744 for the woodgrained Deluxe eight-cylinder station wagon.
