'56 Olds Super 88, Yorkshire, N.Y.

TOO MUCH LIPSTICK!! What were they thinking when they painted the bumpers red on this 1956 Oldsmobile Super 88 four-door sedan? Yikes! I spotted it a while back sitting in front of a collision shop in Yorkshire, N.Y., and it has since had a “for sale” sign attached to the window. I don’t know; to me this would be a tough sell — although the rest of the car still looks pretty good. Olds made nearly sixty-thousand of the Super 88 four-door sedans that year. And I’ll bet none of the rest of them have red bumpers.

    It seems you find yourself in the South Towns. Check out a early 50′s Chevy flatbed w/ a 4-sale sign on Rt240, just north of the Genesee road intersection in the town of Concord.

      Ken, I used to be in the South Towns daily — southern Erie and Cattaraugus & Chautauqua counties; now, I’m up in northern Erie and Niagara counties every day. I know that corner though!

    I’m with you Jim – that paint job on the bumpers is hideous and could be likened to drawing a mustache on the Mona Lisa! My brother had a ’56 98 ‘Holiday’ 4-door sedan which had the same color scheme as the one in picture you posted from what looks like an Olds ad. They were sweet looking machines although they suffered from noisy valve lifters.
