This 1978 Buick Century Sport Coupe is still sitting out by the road in the town of Freedom, N.Y., even though I took this photo last December. This was GM’s first year for its down-sized intermediates, and Buick (as well as Oldsmobile) featured this fastback styling in both two- and four-door versions. Buick had four different two-door fastbacks: the Century Special, Century Custom, Century Limited, and the pictured Century Sport Coupe (billed as “for the enthusiast… with special ride-and-handling suspension”). The fastback styling turned out to be not such a good idea, and it wasn’t until 1980 that Buick introduced “dramatic new notchback styling” for the Century four-door (two-doors were still fastbacks). In 1981 all Century sedans were four-doors. And the one I found, if you’re interested, is for sale.
