Sen. Carl Kruger: Tax Indian Cigarettes, Protests Be Damned

Carl Kruger, chair of the State Senate’s Finance Committee, is determined that New York State begin collecting taxes on cigarettes sold by Native Americans to non-Native Americans. The failure to collect those taxes, Kruger says, has cost the state $1.6 billion per year.

The courts have ruled that New York can tax the sale of Indian cigarettes to non-Indians, but let’s leave aside the question sovereignty for a moment. Listen to this audio file of Kruger on the prospect of Native Americans protesting the imposition of taxes on tobacco.

That’s tough talk from a Brooklyn guy for whose constituents images of tires burning on the I-90 are entertainment on the nightly news. Is Kruger trying to get the NYS Thruway shut down?

Indian land is another country, Senator. Let’s try to be diplomatic.
