Saab: Going, going… wait a minute!

So maybe the Saab brand won’t disappear after all. Word came down today from Trollhättan, Sweden (where Saab is headquartered) that it had closed on its sale to Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings Co. Ltd (BAIC) of certain Saab 9-3 and current 9-5 powertrain technology and tooling. Saab will assist BAIC to integrate this technology into future BAIC vehicles. The 9-5 tooling will be moved to China where it will be used for BAIC models, and the 9-3 technology will be used for future models.
Beijing Automotive won’t be taking over the Saab brand, as General Motors is still looking for a buyer for that and Saab’s remaining assets. The Dutch sports-car manufacturer Spyker Cars NV is currently in negotiations with GM to take over the brand. Time will tell.
