Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons @ Mohawk

For ten years, three albums, and countless tours, singer/songwriter Mark Stuart led the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, a band at the forefront of the Americana movement. With the blessing from the late Man In Black himself, the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash walked the line between sin and salvation, often leaning toward the former. After countless lineup shifts and a sens that he was living under the shadow of his band’s namesake, Stuart relocated to Austin, Texas, and took a good hard look at his life. He shortened the name of the band to Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons and began writing a new record, Bend in the Road. Already receiving acclaim in alt/country circles, Bend In The Road is a remarkable record. Starting off with a cover of Billy Joe Shaver’s “I’m Just an Old Chunk of Coal,” the record is a challenging look at living a hard life on the road. Still, the music essentially remains the same and Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons are sure to live up to the legacy of their former namesake with their marathon sets that will have audiences spilling their beers during one song and crying in it the next. Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons perform tonight at the Mohawk.
