Old Obstacle to Jail Expansion Unearthed

holding_centerCounty Executive Chris Collins’s proposal to build a new lockup at 120-134 W. Eagle Street is not a new idea, according to this 1998 Buffalo News Article.

The original section of the Erie County Holding Center was designed by renowned architect E.B. Green, who also designed the Albright Knox Art Gallery, the First Presbyterian Church and the Market Arcade, among other area landmarks.

The article identifies the separate, W. Eagle Street building, which currently houses the Erie County Board of Elections, as a “contributing structure” to the Joseph Ellicott Historical District.

Green also designed Buffalo’s War Memorial Auditorium, which was demolished this year and is soon to be commemorated as a coffee table book. A Bass Pro store may or may not take its place.

These cowards take pride in taking away any humanity the dog owner may have. The officers live to see the citizen in pain and what worse pain then for the pet owner to see his small child forced to witness the murder. All the time the owner pleaded for these thugs not to shoot and kill his dog. Which i am sure prompted them to want even more to murder the pet. I personally will not allow any thug murderer to arbitrarily murder anymore of my family members. (Notice i did not threaten officers unless they think they are thug murderers). I know many who feel the same. Oh I know we will hear how we are not giving respect to the officers poor things. I will hear how it shouldn’t reflect on other officers. Although in any group when a member breaks the rules. He reflects his crime on the rest of the members. The police should be no different. As long as these officers thumb there noses at the people that pay there salary and not take dog training classes. In most cases for free. Not attending training will make any shooting by police no excuse. I am tired of these cowards that feel so strong and brave shooting defenseless pups. I am more tired of their bosses allowing this with a reason that makes it okay to murder dogs so vague in process and guidelines.

    • So true. When the members of the K9 team at my department found out I was an advocate for animals, they thought it would be good fun to brag about what they do to their K9’s in front of me. When I chose to ignore them, the lead K9 “trainer” brought his dog into the station and hanged him to unconsciousness in front of the civilian night crew, including me, to send the message: “Try and stop me.” This torture is standard procedure in the vast majority (if not all) of K9 units, and they jokingly named ours “The Hang ‘Em High Club.” http://www.stoplynching.com

      • What’stheworldcomingtoo

Sounds like they have serious mental issues and don’t need to be officers.

      • goodmandawn

That’s right. I think the people that defend the police no matter what they do have serious mental issues too. The defenders probably wish they could pull the trigger and take a life too.

      • barbarajnorton

Holy shit, I had no idea….. those mother fuckers, hang their asses. I cannot believe we, as taxpayers, are paying for this shit. I would have knocked his ass out and went to jail. Then sued his ass out of ever handling an animal. FURIOUS!!!

      • I’m glad you feel that way, but I couldn’t have “knocked his ass out.” First of all, I went into shock and froze. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and hearing, and it truly paralyzed me. But that was fortunate for me, because I was surrounded by armed police officers, all male, and all bigger than me, who wouldn’t have even let it get to that point (except the jail part, for even trying). This was quite a few years ago, and there was no social media, I tried the mainstream media, and found that they help cover it up. I went to the D.A.’s office, the City Manager’s office, the “humane” society, even up to the State Attorney General’s office (all corrupt), contacted every animal rights group I could think of (only In Defense of Animals did anything, writing to the Chief of Police, and generating another letter from a professional), but all that resulted in was retaliation against me, including deadly sabotage of my vehicle. It is STILL going on, and all I can do is spread the word.

      • Ken

I went into shock when the officer shot my two dogs the older dog 14 years old blind. she was shot in the head and neck. Started flopping on the street. I thought I was a strong man but that was more than I could bear.( justice 4 pepper and danni )

      • I am so sorry. I went to your page, and I will share your story on Facebook. It is a mentality which pervades in police/sheriffs/military. From my observations, the self-centered bully mentality rules. Then there are folks like me, who are in the opposite direction, but will fight them. They don’t like that. Most of the rest fall in the middle, and go along with what the bullies dictate, whether they like it or not, because they are weak followers.

      • Ken

Thank you for the kind words this is something I don’t think anyone should have to go through some kid taking control of your life like that and ripping apart with support from his boss

      • Ken

Now they have these tools out there that will back the police no matter what. we all know until it happens to someone very close to them. then they all say hey well maybe I was wrong

  • Mike S.

bumbling idiots and chest pounding bullies. They probably practice drawing their firearm in the mirror every morning before work. How do you get the wrong house?

    • allkreatures

      You talkin’ to me?

    • What’stheworldcomingtoo

Exactly, learn how to read. How did they even fill out the application let alone pass a test to become a police officer. They shoot a dog and then he hides behind his owner and they go up to the dog and shoot it in the head and kill it, what kind of animals are they? They do this in front of a 2 year old boy and could of killed an innocent woman in the apartment below. The problem is they feel they are above the law and can do anything they want.

  • Michael Cannon

“Instead, police shot Damian multiple times as Meer’s two-year old son watched.”
Remember this kid, this is what the “heroes” are really like.

    • barbarajnorton

And this is where that kids rightful hate of the cops begins………

    • goodmandawn

The police should be sued for the wrongful death of the dog and traumatizing the child. They won’t improve their behavior unless the public demands it. Calling, emailing, and sending petitions to legislators for the police to end the shoot first ask questions later policies.

  • mkayw

I thought cops had to pass some kind of an IQ test. These numbskulls must have had the answers fed to them beforehand. Are they incapable of making sure they have the correct address before entering a property with their guns blazing? Can they even read a warrant? Or don’t they give a damn? Incidents like this are textbook examples of violation of people’s Fourth Amendment rights against illegal seizure and destruction of private property. Sue their azzes. Where the hell is the ACLU in these cases? I thought they were supposed to stand up and protect our constitutional rights. They don’t seem much interested in protecting the rights of a two year old child to be safe and secure in his own home. Or the rights of a woman to be safe and secure in her own bedroom. But then only dogs died here. They were completely innocent of any crime, but they were just dogs. They have no rights.

  • Busch

    What absolute morons!

  • Bill Matthews

what a bunch of candy ass cowards. I hope and pray that the cowards who killed or maimed those innocent dogs receive the same fate .

  • EVERYONE should see how police and sheriffs and military treat their own K9’s behind the scenes. It is the opposite of what they tell you via their kiss-ass mainstream media sources. The dogs are tortured routinely, and WAY MORE are killed by their handlers and “trainers” than by any people on the street. http://www.stoplynching.com

  • Renna2477

Please stay safe and vigilant Mr. Albert while you seek justice for all these dogs who are being murdered.

  • Sarah Pretty Dynasty

I WILL FIGHT WITH YOU FOR THIS! I AM SICK & TIRED OF SEEING PITBULLS SHOT FOR NO REASON. POLICE NEED TO BE TRAINED IN HOW TO HANDLE ANY ANIMAL THEY MAY ENCOUNTER. PITBULLS ARE NOT MONSTERS. I RESCUE PITTIES! THIS IS AN EPIDEMIC ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, NOT JUST HERE IN BUFFALO. I WILL FIGHT FOR MY DOGS. THIS IS NOTHING BUT SENSELESS SLAUGHTER. I pay close attention to all these dog killings. There is a better way. Police are here to serve and protect us, which includes OUR PETS! I have been waiting such a long time to see this addressed here and that its happening locally makes me sick! Its nothing but profiling and damn near genocide, but because its an animal, its ok? NO

    • What’stheworldcomingtoo

We got our pit from a pit bull rescue group and I absolutely love her. My vet said he has never been bit by a pit but he has been bit by other breeds.

      • They are awesome, brilliant dogs. I’ve rescued quite a few, and am impressed. It hurts to know that some departments are now adding pit bulls to their K9 units. Now, they will endure the same torture that their German shepherd and Belgian Malinois cousins are going through, at the hands of these monsters.

      • goodmandawn

That right. Careless police officers throughout the U.S have been killing K9s too by leaving them in hot cars overnight. The police are out of control because of people that want to defend their wrong doing. They are not Gods they human employees too quick to kill people and dogs. Having trigger fingers is one aspect of their job performance that needs drastic improvement.

  • Debra Sands Hughes

“Meer claims Damian, although a pit bull, was not a threat to the officers.”
Although a pit bull? Right there, the media again instills in our brains that pit bulls are aggressive and threatening dogs. I’m so sick of seeing pit bulls being viciously murdered and not protected because of the societal stereotypes that have been placed on these beautiful dogs. I’m a proud parent of a pit bull and she’s the most affectionate and loving dog I’ve ever been blessed to meet, yet have as a family member. Shame on the BPD!! And let’s put an end to BSL!!

    • What’stheworldcomingtoo

I have a pit and she is so sweet and loving. Shame on the BPD is right!

  • JohnDoelll

Shooting a dog over a harmless plant, even if they found pot could have been medical oil even and legal! Its disgusting!! Worry about the heroin and crack, leave pot and pits alone you scumbag cops!!!

  • Joshua Ross Ketry

The real problem is not the police. The real problem – the ROOT problem – is the failed war on drugs and the no-knock raids. End the war on drugs and you end all of this plus much more – nearly all of the racial tension and more than 50% of all gun crime in America is a result of the failed war on drugs and the black market it creates.

End the war on drugs. End the violence.

    • barbarajnorton

Amen to that, and half the prisons would be empty as well. This idiot “war” should never have happened.

    • goodmandawn

Drug dealers didn’t shoot those dogs two hard-hearted police officers killed those dogs with no provocation. End the shoot first ask questions later policing policies throughout the U.S. Begin a war on literacy to help the police learn how to read house numbers correctly. Every time they kill 75-85 innocent dogs per hour throughout the U.S. they are at the wrong address. If we wait for the war on drugs to end for police to stop killing dogs they will all be extinct.

  • Ave

Hope that pit bull died nice and slow!

    • David Bristol

YOU are part of the problem. Oh, and you’re a piece of shit.

      • FactOverEmotion

        She sure is!

    • What’stheworldcomingtoo

Your a POS they are the most friendly and nicest dogs you could have. My pit likes to lick people, she thinks she is a lap dog. She is so loving not like yourself!!!

      • Ave

You totally sound like someone who would own a pit, grammar and all.

      • Norton Commando

The AKC classes pitbulls as “family friendly,” dipsh!t.

      • FactOverEmotion

You totally sound like an ignorant person who lacks compassion. I was going to say something negative but I honestly feel sorry for mentally inferior people like you.

      • barbarajnorton

And you totally sound like an asshole. ass and whole.

    • goodmandawn

With its brains decorating the wall and ceiling I doubt your wish came true. I hope you haven’t done anything in your life that would make someone wish that you were shot and died nice and slow. Dogs are not responsible for the behavior that bad owners teach them. Neither one of the dogs tried to attack before they were shot to death. We need specific responsible dog owner legislation in the U.S.

      • Too late, I’m already wishing a death like that on her.

      • Carrie Leistner

        What is wrong with you?

      • Sick and tired of people thinking they are soooo special, and deserving of privileged status, watching them torture animals, getting off on it and getting away with it. And so, when one of these stinking pos says something like wishes that dog “died nice and slow,” I’m thinking “what a waste of space and oxygen.”

      • Carrie Leistner

Ohh I’m sorry, I thought you were talking about the dog.

      • Denise DeNapoli

You got that right! Straight up oxygen thief! Notice they don’t have a full name or pic. One of those keyboard warriors that diddle themselves whilst reading news blogs. Imagine that life. Hey Ave you are a POS

      • raynne storm

They move on to killing humans than but some are so blind to animal cruelty they are incapable of putting 2 and 2 together.

    • FactOverEmotion

Looks like we found the scumbag!

    • Fed up

Hey you troll moron karma’s a (female dog) Ironically and unfortunately for you. And it’s coming your way!

    • barbarajnorton

      WTF? ARE YOU SAYING?

    • Keith Busby

I hope the same for you, you fucking idiot

    • VeganKeyLimePie

“Pit bulls” are just dogs people bred for strength and huge mouths, and abused them into being fighting machines to entertain degenerates. Every pit bull I’ve known well has only wanted peace and happiness; they’re smart, sweet dogs with great characters. Only those who’ve been ruined by thugs abusing them have been vicious, and even they can turn around with proper care, as Vick’s victims did. Violent “humans” are the problem deserving of your wrath…not dogs…but you’re way more afraid of those ruthless thugs, so you make remarks like that. Which makes you look like a coldhearted moron and coward.

    • James R List

      your a fucking asshole

    • Denise DeNapoli

      Wow what a POS

    • worked2death

I hope you die nice and slow also maybe in a hot field with both legs broke your a sick rotten human look at you hiding with no name, you make Me sick.

    • raynne storm

      You are a coward.

    • Bill Perkins

textbook troll that hides their identity, meaningless twit

  • Danielle

If automatically shooting dogs is a department policy, the policy needs to change, period. If the BPD won’t change the policy, they need to be taken to court to have the policy changed for them. Discharging any weapon when no lives are in danger should be illegal – isn’t it?

  • Gibbons53

Way to build community relations, officers! Beyond sickening. Just wondering how many white people’s dogs were killed like this. But then again, it’s widespread police practice to do most of these petty busts in black neighborhoods because if they pulled this crap in a white neighborhood the outcry would be taken seriously. Don’t take my word for it, check out Michael Wood, former cop and Marine vet http://michaelawoodjr.net/

    • goodmandawn

Unfortunately Puppycide (police dog killing) is occurring throughout the U.S. the police are not discriminating against dog owners they are killing everybody’s dog when they go to the wrong houses. City Councils are being sued left and right by angry and grieving dog owners for the wrongful death of their dogs. I have signed several petitions on Facebook for the police officers who kill dogs without justification to be fired.

  • Norton Commando

Buffalo police are straight up sh!t. From the uniformed officers to the detectives. Just totally corrupt and totally inept.

  • goodmandawn

More shoot first ask questions later policing policies for the public to contend with. Police dog killing based on breed specific speculation that they might or could be in danger at some point is wrong. They make me sick.

  • Fed up

These cops should never be able to own a pet in their life, they should be fired and registered as animal cruelty offenders for LIFE. Its inhumane and frankly disgusting and vile that these pieces of crap are suppose to be the ones who protect us. These scumbags who shoot a damn innocent dog first and don’t think are the worst kinds of idiot’s on earth. I wish nothing but horrible luck and life for them until they account for what terrible things they did and sincerely apologize. The Buffalo Police department also needs to hold there heads in shame and admit there policy is that of a barbaric bush league police force. They need a new policy when dealing with a dog just sitting there instead of shooting it because there pussy police officers thought they couldn’t handle a damn dog. Pathetic, disgusting, infuriating and quite frankly not surprising.

  • Mike Scales

You know what to all the people that are against pitbullls why don’t you do some research about pitbullls. Pitbullls are the most family oriented dog out there. It is how you as a person that raises that dog. If you only feed it once a day keep it locked up outside then yeah it is gunna be mean. Good Lord people bring your dog inside they get cold just like we do. Plus I seen this video and you can hear the guy numerous times asking them (buffalo police officers) not to shoot his dog after the dog crawled out of the window. So before you judge someone research it first. Cory Meer I’m truly sorry to see what happened to your FAMILY DOG. I HOPE YOU GET JUSTICE.

    • 82d

You are whacked out., Pit bulls kill or maim more people than any other breed, Not all pit bull owners are drug dealers, but all drug dealers have pit bulls.

      • Mike Scales

YOUR WACKED OUT. PIT BULLS ARE THE MOST FAMILY ORIENTED ANIMAL. LOOK IT UP Azzhole. Plus I never said that all drug dealers have pit bulls.

      • Karen McClive

82d There is this really cool thing called the Internet and Google. You might want to learn to use those before posting things and making yourself look dumb.

      • Meaningless You
      • al smith

        trash site

      • Stephanie

That site is run by a slew of pitbull haters. Perhaps looking at a neutral site would be more educational.

      • worked2death

Prove It your out to lunch PITBILLS have NOT KILLED MORE PEOPLE, but the dam cops are OUT OF CONTROL, I have one and if they ever come into my home and try and shoot him you can believe I will return fire and it wont be to the chest either.

      • Mary

You are being ridiculous. Pit bulls kill and traumatize more than all other breeds combined. The research is easy to find. There are many web sites and fb pages about the victims of pit bull attack. When you see an attack you know how stupid it is to compare a pit attack to any other dog breed.

      • Bill Perkins

Dog racism is moronic, Pitbulls are wonderful dogs. The rare bad dog can be traced back to a bad owner. But why are you here? These dogs had there homes broken into by Gestapo cops illegally and still did not attack. Didnt stop them from murdering the dogs though. Go find a dog attack to protest you stupid troll.

      • Stephanie

If any other breed were treated the way pitbulls get treated by the bad owners, there would far, far more deaths. Pitbulls only behave the way they are asked to. As a breed, one of their unique traits is their desire to please. Which means they will do literally anything their owner asks of them. Even if it means fighting. Perhaps you should fully educate yourself on a subject before becoming passionate about it.

  • kenville

These cops need to be outed and their names and photos plastered on every corner. They continue to kill what are basically people’s family members and if the law won’t do its job, I say let citizens and the street sort it out.

  • David T DeLano

How about printing the officer’s names? They always publish the names of the accused in the news.

    • Tamra Fletcher

Officer Christopher Hoffmann. I believe the owner received a substantial settlement, and the officer that shot the dog, suffered stress related issues from the many threats that were posted towards him.

  • Greg Ropp

Sickening story – but what’s up with the photo with this article???? It’s either from a different incident OR the story is wrong. Any ideas? This is a photo of a pitbull being shot in the street (which means it could have been attacking) – the story says the dog was shot INSIDE the house.

    • Marci Mccauliff

It was a rottweiler and he was killed bc he jumped out the window to prtect his person from the cops………he was harassed bc he was filming them(which is legal), I
watched it unfold on tv, it was awful…..

    • Stephanie

This statement is exactly why breed specific legislation does not work. The dog has very clear and identifiable markings that are common in rottweilers and the body shape and lack of a long tail, show that it is not a pitbull. I guess when in doubt, call it a pitbull and condemn it…

    • TR Young

That’s a Rottweiler, not a pit bull, and it was in Los Angeles that it happened. Another case of the media not knowing their collective backsides from a hole in the ground.

  • MW Hohimer

Cops are out of control in this country. In these cases they were just dogs, though they did almost kill an Innocent bystander in the next apartment. But there have been other cases where they got the wrong address and killed the innocent people there. I don’t blame people for getting fed up and killing cops.

    • Meaningless You

You don’t blame people for killing cops? That’s like saying a bunch of pit bulls hurt people before so I guess I don’t blame people for killing pit bulls? Disgusting attitude.

      • Keith Busby

How would you react if they erroneously entered your home and shot your family member in the process? Then they walk away like they’ve done nothing wrong, and face no consequences?

    • richardszczepankiewicz

      You sir are an idiot.

  • Mallory G Morrison

Are they doing the drugs they find? Well, when they have the right house and actually find drugs?

  • Meaningless You

There is no bias in this article at all lol Agenda? Lol

    • An Albertan now in BC

Did you read the last paragraph? It is the Buffalo PD policy to shoot all pitbull type dogs on sight rather than wait to see if aggressive or dangerous. They don’t have legal authority to do that. It is a crime. Someone needs to hold them accountable. How many different ways do you need to hear it explained?

  • Keith Busby

Come into my house and kill my family member, you’d better get used to sleeping in body armour!

  • VeganKeyLimePie

Btw, the photo at top of article isn’t right, that’s a different case (Los Angeles) and is a rottweiler who was also gunned down simply for existing and being “owned” by a man who didn’t protect him. The man left the dog in his car to go film and ask questions of the police who had barricaded a neighborhood due to some suspected crime. The loyal dog saw the cops moving in on his loved one and jumped out the open window and was gunned down for attempting to shield his person from harm. This was a couple of years ago, I saw it unfold live on tv…horrifying.

    • Tamra Fletcher

That would be our “brave” officers of the Hawthorne PD. The animal never attempted to rush the officer. Why is it that officers who are afraid of dogs, never call those trained to deal with animals rather than murder them in front of children. That is what animal control is paid to do.

      • VeganKeyLimePie

I know, all the poor dog did was to walk over to be with his man who he saw as endangered. Thank you for saying “murder” too, as the human arrogance has got to stop.

    • TR Young

You are absolutely correct, and I place the blame of the dog’s murder squarely on the shoulders of his idiot owner, who just HAD to prove a point to the police. It was a sickening and disgusting scene.

    • Bill Perkins

Yep, Max. Also killed by a dity cop.

  • Mary

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/PitBullsShotByPolice/

Pit bulls are known threats. Of course police are going to protect themselves. Ironically, the criminals had pit bulls. They know what they have.

    • Dan Stenberg

Are you kiddig me?? The ceiminals had pit bulls?? Neither one was even CHARGED with a crime, and at least one was the wrong house entirely.

Im a pit bull owner, Veteran, have a BA, and a full time job. People like me are the majority of pit bull owners. Don’t get caught up believing the hate.

    • Tanya Fagan

First charges were not brought against the people. In one case it was a wrong house that means he wasn’t a criminal. I am not a criminal. I do not do drugs. Never have been a drug dealer. I own Pit Bulls. I have learned they are not as some people might think.
I know many people that are not criminals that own Pit Bulls. Stereotyping the ignorant way.

    • Courtni

Clearly u are reading a different report because as clearly stated neither were even charged. And actually most pit bulls AREN’T aggressive. It’s the people who train their dogs to fight, which just so happens to be pit bulls. I own 2 pit bulls myself and they are the most loving dogs ever. They are also super great with children so go ahead and try to tell my pitbulls that they are mean. They just might lick u to death. So be ignorant and jump to conclusions just like the ignorant cops who shot the dogs.

    • TR Young

The vast, overwhelming majority of any dogs that fall under the ‘pit bull’ umbrella have never harmed another living thing. Any dog of any breed can be either a good dog or a bad dog. Breed has nothing to do with it. It’s people like you who help perpetuate this ugly myth that keeps the snowball rolling and gathering momentum.

    • Bill Perkins

Such ignorance. Idiot didnt even read the article.

    • Ken

Reason people believe pitbulls are more aggressive is because of how they were raised they want to please their owners so much they’ll do most anything for them like fight but if you don’t raise them to fight and you raise them good the love they want to give it’s the deepest love from dogs you can imagine

  • Josh Smith

God will judge them…Murderers shall be treated as such. If you have no empathy for another person or being…You will also be treated as such….Have Mercy and Mercy will also be granted upon you. Have murder and the result will also be manifest.

  • Jason Bry

Is there any common sense left in this country …most police officers have dogs or pets be it for themselves or there children. With that said it’s funny how people think police are out there just slaughtering dogs for the fun of it…or could it be…and this will be crazy for some of you…that the houses the police are hitting are drug houses ..or gang related or they have weapons, so…what do we think the reason these people have dogs..to protect there “stash” from other dealers, gangs or police. Yes having to shoot a dog sucks, he is just doing what his scumbag owner is training him to do…but that does not trump the police officer that deserves to go home uninjured to his family and children …LET’S USE COMMON SENSE…don’t be a sheep to the bullshit use your own head to make well thought out opinions

    • These so called cops murdered helpless dogs in front of the CHILD that loved those dogs!! While I will agree not all cops are bad, it’s just a few but these guys are in that few!! Disgusting! THIS is why people are afraid of cops.
